Intro: “Holding Her Hand”
“Holding Her Hand” is a series of paintings that grew out of a need to reconcile death and celebrate life. When the artist lost her only sister, she decided to create something on canvas to channel her grief, and to immortalize her sister in a safe and happy place.
In these colorful, stylized paintings, the artist and her sister are depicted as apples, and they move through their grandparents’ house – a place they visited often as children. They end their tour just outside the apple orchard behind the big, brick house. The apples stand side-by-side, stems intertwined, ‘holding hands.’
The artist worked from memory – not having been inside the old house for over 50 years. But the memories flooded back to her – not in black and white, but in vibrant, living color.
